About the Team:
As a member of the Essex-Windsor EMS leadership team, the Captain will report to the Deputy Chief of Professional Standards and work collaboratively with other members of the Professional Standards department.The role is responsible for leading the advancement of Community Paramedicine while also supporting the broader responsibilities of Professional Standards. It focuses on ensuring the delivery of professional, evidence-based care for clients of the MIH-CP department, while advancing Community Paramedic knowledge and practice to support, individualized high-quality care for patients and families.
About the Position:
The Captain, Professional Standards provides clinical oversight, leadership, supervision, and strategic direction to the Mobile Integrated Healthcare – Community Paramedicine (MIH-CP) team. This role is responsible for leading clinical aspects of the MIH-CP program, ensuring alignment with its core mandate: Facilitating, Advocating, Coordinating, and Educating patients. The Captain will oversee daily clinical operations, ensuring the needs of patients and staff are met while advancing the program’s mission and vision.
This position is accountable for establishing and maintaining clinical standards, policies, and strategies that enhance program effectiveness. The Captain will monitor, supervise, and consult with community paramedics throughout the patient care continuum to ensure the delivery of efficient, high-quality community paramedicine services.
Key responsibilities include developing and delivering education and training, supporting data tracking and reporting, and leading research initiatives. The Captain will also conduct performance evaluations, support quality assurance programs, maintain records and certifications in compliance with the Ambulance Act and applicable regulations, investigate internal and external incidents, and prepare and present formal reports as required.
Qualifications:
- Current certification as a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) in Ontario or a Degree in a related field (e.g., Nursing, Public Health, or Social Work)
- Certification or formal training in Community Paramedicine, Primary Health Care, or a related specialty is considered an asset.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive clinical experience in paramedicine, nursing, community health, or mobile healthcare settings.
- Experience working with vulnerable, complex, or community-based patient populations is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of evidence-based practices in community paramedicine, nursing, chronic disease management, and/or health promotion.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and standards, including the Ambulance Act, the Long-Term Care Homes Act, and applicable regulations governing health professions in Ontario.
- Demonstration of strong leadership/management/supervisory and coaching skills in the development of team members and support staff
- Proficient in business writing, editing, research and records management;
- Excellent organizational, comprehension, and concentration skills;
- Strong communication skills are essential as is the ability to work effectively with community partners, the general public and staff; demonstrated negotiation and conflict resolution skills;
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative practice model with interprofessional teams;
- Physically able to perform medium to heavy lifting during home visits
- Demonstrated ability to use initiative and work autonomously utilizing critical thinking skills, advance decision-making, problem recognition and problem-solving skills;
- Excellent communication and presentation skills to communicate effectively with staff, public, committees and outside agencies.
- Strong customer service, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Excellent analytical, creativity, problem-solving, decision-making, and report writing skills.
- Excellent planning and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
- Skilled in alternative dispute resolution; demonstrated ability to deal with sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy and compassion.
- Well-developed computer skills and proficiency in utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, presentation and database software, including the ability to write and analyse queries.
- CPR certified;
- At minimum, a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license or equivalent and a clean driver’s abstract. Must be able to travel and work from various locations.
- The successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search as well as a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
Hours of Work:
40 hours per week. Must be available to work occasional afternoons, nights and weekends as required.What We Are Offering:
